Preliminary Exam Reveals No Bird Flu – Azerbaijan State Veterinary Service

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr S. Babayeva / Monitoring of the Absheron Peninsula, Davachi, and Salyan regions, intended to prevent bird flu revealed no dead birds, a spokesman for the State Veterinary Service at the Azerbaijan Agriculture Ministry, Yolchu Khanvali, said on 26 September.

The monitoring is being held between 24 and 28 September. The territory of Aghjabadi and Lankaran regions will be examined on 27 September. Samples will be taken afterwards from poultry farms and shops for laboratory examination.

The results of the monitoring will be announced on 6 October. The frequency of monitoring exercises will depend on the results, Khanvali said.

The examination is being held by a special commission including experts of the Veterinary Service, Ecology Ministry, Health Ministry, and the Azerbaijan Hunter Association.

According to the Veterinary Service, the bird flu situation in Azerbaijan is stable.

This year, the Veterinary Service held eight monitoring exercises, which examined 8,210 samples of wild and domestic birds. So far the virus was not been uncovered.

The ban on hunting and the use and sale of wild birds, however, continues in Azerbaijan. All frontier veterinary check-points in Azerbaijan are working with medium security to prevent the spread of bird flu and other diseases - African Plague, Foot-and-Mouth Disease, and so on.
