Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr S. Babayeva / By 1 October some 2,100t of tobacco leaves were harvested in Azerbaijan, which is 47.8% less than in the same period of 2006, according to the Azerbaijan State Statistics Committee.

The reason for the decrease is a reduction of the tobacco sown area by 35.3% caused by unfavourable weather conditions. The total area used for growing tobacco makes up some 1,200ha.

The tobacco harvest was forecasted to comprise some 3,000t this year. In 2006, over 4,000t of tobacco leaves were harvested in Azerbaijan.

Tobacco is mainly grown in the Sheki-Zagatala economic area (Zagatala, Sheki, Gakh, Gabala, and Balakan regions).
