Ministry of Economic Development to Hire Consultant to Develop Strategy on Hard Garbage Handling in Baku and Absheron

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr I.Khalilova / Next week the Azerbaijan Ministry of Economic Development will select a consultant to be engaged in development of tender procedures for definition of a construction contractor and management of the first garbage processing plant in Azerbaijan, Askar Alakparov, the head of the Department on Investment Policy at the Ministry, said. The selection will be more probably carried out between two companies, including he Finnish company Poyri.

The new consultant will develop the strategy on handling hard garbage in Baku and Absheron.

The Finnish Poyri company held a preliminary assessment of proposals of the three companies for the Ministry of Economic Development, the Japanese EBARA, Austrian EVN and French CNIM.

The volume of domestic waste in the Absheron Peninsula and Baku City will be defined after preliminary examinations have been held by the consultant. The project will be financed by the State budget. The Azerbaijan Investment Company will not participate in the project, because AIC usually participates in commercially reasonable projects.

Construction of the plant will take two to three years. The project to be implemented in Baku is assessed at several hundred millions of euros with the annual power of 500,000t of processed domestic wastes. The garbage will be given to the company to be attracted through tender, whereas the terms are still to be defined.

According to official data, around 1mln tons of domestic waste is collected annually within Baku and it suburbs.
