Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr I. Khalilova / The Azerbaijani Emergency Situations Ministry is to check whether buildings being constructed in Azerbaijan correspond to norms and requirements, but the work is not expected to be completed by the end of 2007, the Azerbaijani Emergency Situations Minister Kamaladdin Heydarov said on 12 November.

"The inspections will be held stage by stage and will depend on the type of building. Information on the work carried out will be available," he said.

According to Heydarov, it is impossible to complete the inspections by the end of this year.

The inspection of construction sites was launched after a 16-storey building being constructed by the company Mutaffakir in a central Baku street collapsed on 28 August, resulting in 25 deaths. Experts examining the scene of the incident said the collapse was caused by violation of technical safety regulations, as well as improper construction methods.

According to the Labour Inspection attached to the Azerbaijani Ministry for Labour and Social Protection, over 800 buildings are being constructed in Azerbaijan.
