Azerbaijani Agriculture Ministry Denies Threat of Grain Deficit

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Babayeva / Azerbaijan will face no deficit in grains in Azerbaijan in 2008 like in 2008, Ismat Abbasov, the Azerbaijani Agriculture Minister said.

According to Abbasov, with consideration of import and consumption of grains on January 2008 the remains will comprise nearly 1mln tons.

Abbasov said that if the existing grains-sown area in Azerbaijan can be increased from 485,000h to 600,000h amid of 27% of productivity, Azerbaijan can cover its demand in grains.

" Azerbaijan is a country which in war condition and it should have sufficient grains reserves," the Minister said.

According to the State Statistics Committee, in 2007 the grains industry in Azerbaijan comprised 2mln tons in November as compared to the demand of 3mln tons. The rest 1mln tons Azerbaijan buys from Russia and Kazakhstan.
