European Commission to Send Experts to Azerbaijan to Devise Proposals on Agriculture for 2008 Indicative Program ENP

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 January /corr. Trend I.Khalilova / The European Commission will send experts to Azerbaijan in regard to proposals in the sphere of agriculture for the 2008 indicative program within the European Neighborhood Policy, reported Rufat Mammadov the Executive Director of the European Commission's Coordinating Bureau on Technical Assistance Programs (TACIS) to Azerbaijan.

The visit of experts, Pier Van Rouz Brek and Hadidji Kadri, will take place this week.

At present two fields, justice and agrarian sector, are being considered. One of them will be included in the Action Program and the second one will be financed within the 2008 Action Plan.

According to the first direction, support will be directed towards the penal system, regional courts, Academy of Justice and harmonization of national legislation toe European standards. Priorities of the second sector have not been set yet.

Priorities of the second sector will be set with the assistance of the EC experts. Mammadov said that key efforts will be made in agriculture to assist Azerbaijanis joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). The ENP's budget indicated for Azerbaijan for 2007-2010, totals €92mln.

The priority directions of the ENP action plan for Azerbaijan (2007-2013), adopted in Brussels in November 2006, are strengthening democracy in the country, improvement of business and investment climate, support for sustainable economic development, adjusting economic legislation and management practices, strengthening of cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan in the energy and transport sectors, regional cooperation and cooperation in border governance.
