Nikkei gains more than 300 points on US recovery plan

( dpa )- Japan's key Nikkei index rose more than 300 points Friday as recession worries subsided thanks to an economic stimulus package introduced in the United States.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average surged 367.05 points, or 2.8 per cent, to 13,459.83.

The broader Topix index of all first-section issues was also up 43.12 points, or 3.36 per cent, to 1,327.57.

On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 107.15-20 yen, up from Thursday's 5 pm quote of 106.37-39 yen.

The euro was quoted at 1.4772-77 dollars, up from Thursday's 5 pm quote of 1.4593-95 dollars, and at 158.31-36 yen, up from 155.23-27 yen.
