Ban on Import of Poultry Products May Create Breaks in Activity of Poultry Enterprises in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku 25 January /corr. Trend S.Babayeva / The temporary ban imposed on the import of the poultry products from Iran, Turkey, Russia and Great Britain due to outbreak of 'bird flu' may create breaks in the activity of the poultry enterprises in Azerbaijan, said the Head of the Republic Society of Poultry Farmers, Aydin Veliyev.

"There is not base of eggs for incubators in Azerbaijan and we should purchase them from above-mentioned prohibited countries," he said.

Since the beginning of the year, the State Veterinary Service of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Agriculture has imposed temporary ban on the import of poultry products, feeds and animal products from Turkey, Iran, Ukraine and India. Since the last year, such measures have been taken with regards to Russia's region of Rostov, Canada, Poland, Israel, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Great Britain.

The Society's Head stated that after completion of the reserves, the poultry enterprises will have to cease production due to lack of the hen's egg till the situation stabilizes.

According to Veliyev, the breaks in the activity of the local enterprises may bring to deficit and price increase although it is undesirable.

"The poultry farmers may purchase eggs from Netherlands, but it will come more expensive, considering the VAT," he said.

The Republic Society of Poultry Farmers brings together 29 enterprises (Mardakan Broyler, Siyazan Broyler, Devechi Broyler, Zira Broyler, Arco Co, Imishli Broyler, Shamkir Broyler). The number of people engaged in the sphere of poultry farming makes up 15-20.000.

According to Veliyev, the local enterprises cover more than 90% of demand for the poultry products in Azerbaijan, but despite this, the poultry products are being imported as well.
