( dpa )- Mercedes has given the CLS a new look with a modified three-dimensional front grille, restyled light-alloy wheels and a new V6 engine for the entry level model with an output of 170 kW/231 hp.

Available in German showrooms from March 2008, the flagship model the CLS 63 AMG - comes with a powerplant of 378 kW/514 hp, redesigned 19-inch light-alloy wheels and a new sports exhaust system.

Viewed from the rear, the new-generation CLS features a new apron, modified LED tail lights and a centre section of the rear bumper with a drop-down look.

A new deactivation function for the low-beam headlamps when the ignition is switched off helps to optimise energy management, according to the car maker.

Modifications to the interior include the three-spoke leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons, a new-look instrument cluster with white dials contrasting with a chased surface of the backplate . The previous matt laurel colour scheme has been replaced with new chestnut wood trim elements.

The entry level CLS 280 petrol engined version, which sells in Germany for 55,700 euros (81,600 dollars) accelerates from zero to 100 kilometres an hour in 7.7 seconds. The top speed is listed at 245 km/h. Combined fuel consumption is 9.8-10 litres per 100 kilometres .

The CLS 320 CDI with its 165 kW/224 hp V6 diesel engine has a torque of 540 Newton metres with Mercedes listing consumption at between 7.6 - 8.1 litres of diesel.

All CLS models are fitted with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission as standard. In manual shift mode "M", the driver can shift through the gears using the shift paddles on the steering wheel and shortening the acceleration time.

The CLS 63 has a speedshift function which blips the throttle automatically during downshifts to "intensify the emotive driving experience", the car maker says. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h is 4.5 seconds.

The top speed is limited electronically at 250 km/h. The price in Germany is listed at 106,624 euros (156,000 dollars) with the manufacturer offering a wide choice of new optional extras such as a performance steering wheel with silver- coloured aluminium shift paddles.
