Construction Site of First Waste Processing Plant in Azerbaijan Determined

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 January / corr. Trend I. Khalilova/ The Ministry of Economic Development of Azerbaijan will complete the process of receiving the tender proposals from the investors interested in the construction of the plant to process the hazardous wastes from 11 February. Mikail Jabbarov, the deputy minister of economic development of Azerbaijan said. The assessment of the proposals will take about two weeks and the tender commission will choose the winner on March.

Three companies submitted their proposals initially, these companies include Japanese EBARA, Austrian EVN and French CNIM. Their proposals have been assessed by Finnish Poyri. However, the consulting services for the tender are being provided currently by the British Curry& Brown and the company also should develop a strategy on the management of the hazardous wastes in Baku and Absheron peninsular.

According to the deputy minister, the plant is expected to be built in Balakhani, not far from the territory of the current ground of domestic wastes. The minister did not divulge the cost of the project.

The construction of the first plant with a capacity of 500,000 tons per year in Azerbaijan on the incineration of the domestic wastes and the production of electricity will begin in the first half of 2008.

According to official data, 1 mln. tons of garbage is collected every day in Baku and outside Baku.

The project will totally be financed at the Government's expense.
