Labour Inspection Calls on Azerbaijani Construction Companies to Cooperate

Azerbaijan, Baku, 11 April / corr. Trend U. Ismayilova/ The Labour Inspection, under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of Azerbaijan, calls on all Azerbaijani construction companies to cooperate with the inspection to reduce the number of accidents in the industry, said Nabi Shukurlu, the Head of Inspection.

"There were about 22 fatal cases in construction process from Jan to March, 7 out of which accounts for the construction industry," said Shukurlu.

According to the Labour Inspection, about 71 people died in construction field in 2007.

"One ways of reducing the accidents in construction sector is by regularly training the construction worker, where they are taught about the rules of security and protection of labour," he said.

The Labour Inspection held training for the domestic construction companies on Protection of Labour and Observance of Technical Security Instructions for the first time.

According to Shukurlu, the Inspection is going to continue the training for both domestic and foreign construction companies in order to reduce the number of accidents in construction process.

In August 2007, 16 storied building collapsed in one of the central streets of Azerbaijan resulting in death of 25 people. On 30 August, Azerbaijani President signed a decree on Strengthening Control in Construction Sector according to which the Inspection regularly carries out check-ups in the construction work. Inspection has put ban on 10 construction companies till now.

According to Inspection, some 800 buildings are being constructed in Baku at present.
