The agricultural industry plays an important role in ensuring the country's food security, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said at a ceremony of conferring state awards on June 30, reported Belta.

"The present situation in the world eloquently shows that the production of foodstuffs and the overall level of the agricultural industry play an extremely important role today," the President said.

Alexander Lukashenko said that today we clearly understand that the policy aimed at advancing and supporting the agricultural industry, reviving rural areas was right. "Owing to this policy we ensure the stability on the domestic food market and increase food exports. We do not go around begging for foodstuffs. On the contrary we offer the neighbouring countries our farm produce thus increasing hard-currency revenues and improving the economic state of agricultural companies," the President said.

According to him, in due time when Belarus had troubles selling meat and milk there were many proposals to reduce agricultural production. They said back then that it was cheaper to buy farm products than produce them.

The course of events showed that Belarus took the right course towards the development of the agricultural industry. This is especially clear today when hundreds of millions of people starve around the world and when the food prices increase at a fast pace, Alexander Lukashenko said.

According to the head of state, today the task of the agricultural industry is to use to the maximum the favourable trends in the world food market and increase exports.

The President addressed special thanks the Minsk Motor Works (MMZ trademark) and Amkodor company for designing new products which are in demand in Belarus and abroad. MMZ, in close partnership with research institutions, has creased a lineup of new economical and reliable engines for trucks, tractors and harvesting equipment meeting the Euro-3 and Euro-4 standards. According to Alexander Lukashenko, these achievements is a testament that the industrial companies of Belarus hold their positions on the domestic and world markets and are confident about the future.
