Azerbaijani State Standardization Agency Asks Funds from Government to Construct Special Laboratory Jointly with IAEA

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 July / Trend corr. S.Babayeva / Azerbaijani State Agency on Standardization, Metrology and Patent asked the Government to allocate funds to construct the a laboratory through assistance of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Arif Ashrafov, Head of the Agency, said.

"Under the agreement, we will construct the building for the laboratory. For this purpose we need more funds," Ashraov said.

The cost of the project is AZN 30mln. IAEA will deliver equipment with cost of €1.5mln.

The laboratory is expected to be put into operation in 2009.

Azerbaijani State Agency on Standardization, Metrology and Patent was established by the Presidential order in December 2001. The Agency is a central department of the Executive Administration, which carries out state policy in the sphere of standardization, metrology and certification.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to inhibit its use for military purposes . Though established independently of the United Nations under its own international treaty (the IAEA Statute), the IAEA reports to both the General Assembly and the Security Council . It was established as an autonomous organization on July 29 , 1957 . In 1953, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower envisioned the creation of this international body to control and develop the use of atomic energy.
