Asian stocks are mixed, with Japan's benchmark index bouncing back in afternoon trade after earlier extending a 26-year low amid persistent worries over a worldwide recession, the Associated Press reported.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 stock average fell 67.76 points, or 0.95 percent, to 7,095.14 at the close of the morning session Tuesday. At one point, the index briefly slipped below 7,000 points. But the Nikkei has recovered and was up 2.8 percent in early afternoon trade.

Though markets in Australia and New Zealand are down, it is a different story elsewhere, with South Korea's benchmark index rising for a second straight day and Hong Kong's rebounding from a massive loss.
