USA to Render $250mln Assistance to Georgia

Georgia, Tbilisi, 3 November / Trend corr. N.Kirtskhalia/ The U.S. first assistance to Georgia since the Georgia-South Ossetia conflict will total $250mln.

"The first budgetary tranche in the sum of $250mln will be transferred to the National Bank of Georgia by the end of the week," Nikoloz Gilauri, Georgian Minister of Finance, told after a meeting with donors.

"The funds will be converted into the national currency and will be transferred to the treasury. The assistance of the U.S. government to Georgia will be provided through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)," he said.

"The projects to be financed were also discussed," said USAID Director Robert Wilson, who also took part in the meeting.

"It is a question of infrastructure - construction of roads and high-voltage electric line, etc. More detailed information on the projects will be divulged next year," he said.
