"A general assembly is planned to discuss re-launching the Azerbaijan Insurers Association (AIA) in 2008 and to approve a 2009 strategic action plan," AIA Chairman and MBASK Chairman of the Board Jamil Malikov said on Jan. 9.

"The meeting will be held in late January-early February," Malikov said.

The AIA opened in 2008. The first Azerbaijani International Insurance Forum was held that year. Many international insurance and reinsurance companies attended. In addition to training actuaries receiving international certificates, the AIA also opened an insurance school.

The AIA Education Committee will train employees and top management at insurance companies in 2009, as well as launch an Internet portal with an electronic insurance library, AIA Executive Director Gafar Majidov said.

Control will be strengthened over membership payments in 2009. Members will also receive full information packets on AIA's activities.

The action plan also comprises: holding surveys to uncover problems in the insurance sector; working with insurance companies to join the AIA; developing relations with foreign insurers and their national, as well as international, unions; developing business contacts; and realizing joint projects with insurance associations in Russia, Ukraine and the German Insurers Union.

The second Azerbaijani International Insurance Forum will be held in 2009.

The first Azeri International Insurance Forum was held in July. The event was dedicated to: growth tendencies on the Azerbaijani insurance market; bringing a wealth of experience from the European insurance market to Azerbaijan; developing life insurance; and analyzing the Azerbaijani insurance market as a financial system.

AIA was established in December 2006 by acting Azerbaijani insurance companies.
