Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 30 / Trend , U.Ismayilova /
Last year was successful for the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee (SCC). Projected premiums were exceeded by 43 percent and over one billion manat was transferred to the state budget, SCC head Aydin Aliyev said on Jan. 30.
"The committee also strengthened its activities to prevent smuggling and drug trafficking," he said. Aliyev said the committee seized 350 kilograms of illegal drugs for the first time in 2008.
A criminal case has been launched into the case. Foreigners are among the offenders.
A customs hospital was built to improve the well-being of SCC officials.
A new administrative building of the Baku Customs Department was also commissioned using the single-window system. The system was introduced at all committee subdivisions, including border check-points.
A major problem faced by the SCC is discipline among personnel.
The committee employs 2,500 people.
"In 2008, 165 committee members were prosecuted and 80 - dismissed. Most left at their own request due to inconsistencies in data," Aliyev said.
The figure represents about 10 percent of the total staff, he said. This is not satisfactory, Aliyev added.
