Azerbaijan, Baku, March 19 / Trend , U.Ismayilova/

One reason for the lack of up-to-date consumer goods-quality detection centers in Azerbaijan is the shortage of personnel, Free Consumers Union Chairman Eyub Huseynov said.

The Azerbaijani State Committee on Standardization, Metrology and Patents has started to create a modernm, efficient laboratory, he said.

The expert said that 120,000-130,000 euro is needed to build a laboratory to identify genetically modified organisms in products and two or three times as much is required to build a laboratory to verify the quality of medicine.

Modern equipment is expensive and requires a lot of funds, Huseynov said.

The Azerbaijani Free Entrepreneurs Union held monitoring and uncovered that 50 percent of alcoholic beverages sold in the country's trading network are overdue and harmful to health. Furthermore, 98 percent of wine and 25 percent of baby foods is not suitable for consumption.
