Azerbaijan, Baku, April 14 / Trend , E.Ismayilov/

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is interested in cooperation with Azerbaijan in all fields of navigation and shipbuilding, IMO Expert Jose Mateykan said at a workshop on ballast water management in Baku on April 14.

Mateykan said the ballast water management is too important for the Caspian region, particularly for Azerbaijan, because just ballast water brings harmful biological species to the Caspian Sea and they violate a biological balance of the sea.

"This issue is too important for the IMO, Azerbaijan and the whole region," Mateykan said.

Basically, small ships from the Volga-Don Canal bring harmful species to the Caspian Sea, he said.

Biological species - mnemiopsis in the Caspian Sea reduced number of spat and sturgeon in the sea which causes material losses.
