In 2009, it is forecasted that Azerbaijan will produce at least 1,200-1,300 tons of honey, said Chingiz Farajov, the Head of the Agriculture Ministry Livestock Department.

"Azerbaijan produced 1,400 tons of honey in 2008," said Farajov.

He said the State Agency for Agricultural Lending under the Azerbaijani Agriculture Ministry allocated 21,000 manat to develop bee colonies in 2009.

Azerbaijan has potential to increase honey production by 3.5 times, and the volume of this product can be increased up to 7,000 tons, earlier Farajov said.

He said in 2001 there were 57,000 bee colonies in the country, but now their number exceeds 126,000, but this number could increase to 500,000, which will enable to increase the production of honey up to seven tons in the country.

Beekeeping in Azerbaijan is most developed in the regions, including Dashkasan, Lerik, and Yardimli.

On Oct. 3, the official exchange rate is 0.8035 manat to $1.
