WB regional director familiarizes with anti-crisis strategy in Georgia

The Georgian Parliamentary Speaker, David Bakradze met on Thursday with World Bank Regional Director for the Caucasus Asad Alam.

During the meeting, the bank representative informed the Speaker and members of the parliamentary majority with the new World Bank strategy to overcome the consequences of global economic crisis and the events of August 2008 in Georgia in connection with the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict.

The WB developed the strategy in September. It provides for investment in transport infrastructure, deepening reforms, the cost of social assistance and activities, improving the business environment and enhancing cost-effectiveness.

Alam told reporters after the meeting that the purpose of this strategy is to respond to the impact that has had a crisis. He said the World Bank will provide recommendations to the Government of Georgia to revive and improve the economy.

The sides also discussed the act of economic freedom, which was submitted to the Parliament by Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili on Oct. 7.
