Azerbaijan's transport ministry updates design for reconstruction of large highway

Transport Ministry of Azerbaijan updates the feasibility study for the project on reconstruction of the remaining section of highway Baku-Guba-Russian border, which covers 134-98 km, Azerbaijani Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov said on Oct. 13.

"The new design of this stretch of road is devised by an American company," Mammadov said. - Its construction can start after determining the source of funding."

The total length of the Baku-Guba- Russian border highway is 208 km, but after the reconstruction, it will be reduced to 198 km.

Earlier, in September, was put into operation 118-kilometer-long concrete stretch of the Baku-Guba-Russian border highway. As part of the reconstruction of the road, was carried out the construction and replacement of communications infrastructure, built 20 bridges, nine conversions for transhumance and three overpasses.

Work was carried out by the Italian Todini Costuruzioni Generali SpA Company, and technical controls are carried out by the alliance of companies Temelsu-ECO-AUCO. Cost of works was estimated at 118.7 million manat. The Italian company contracted to carry out works totaling $136 million. Major funding was covered by the loan of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in amount of $100 million, and other part by the Government of Azerbaijan.

Currently, work is continuing on construction of the longest and highest hanging bridge in the country in the Devechi city across the Devechi river. The bridge consists of 16 spans, its length - 544 meters, width - 23 meters, height - 21 meters. Seismic stability of the bridge is estimated at 8-9 points.

According to the minister, presently a road from Gyandob circle to Guba town is also under construction.
