Georgia, Tbilisi, Oct. 30 / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /
The Georgian government has satisfied the requirements of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on equalizing excise tax on imported and local tobacco products, Georgian Finance Minister Kakha Baindurashvili said at a briefing on the results of the governmental meeting on Oct. 30.
"The WTO rigidly conditioned on the equalization of excise tax on the basis of appeal of the British American Tabacco's Ukrainian representative. We face with threat to be excluded from the WTO. Besides, it might create problems to us during negotiations with the EU on free trade, so the government decided to satisfy the requirements," the minister said.
The WTO demanded from Georgia to meet those standards that exist on the excise tax on tobacco products, Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri said at the governmental meeting.
In Georgia, excise tax on imported tobacco products is 0.6 lari and on the products of local production - 0.4 lari.
The Georgian producers said that if the WTO requirement is satisfied, it may lead the local production to the verge of collapse.
According to the finance minister, Georgia appealed to the WTO with a request to keep the difference in excise tax on cigars, which recently began to be produced in Adjara.
