Increasing the fares in the Baku Metro reduced the number of passengers using the metro by 10 percent, the Head of Baku Metro Tagi Ahmadov said on Nov. 18.

In October, upon the decision by the Tariff Council the rates for travel in the Baku Metro was increased from 0.05 to 0.15 manat.

According to Ahmadov, the work of the Baku Metro is impossible to be ensured without the allocation of grants.

"In the whole world the Metro is unprofitable. In Baku, a passenger fare costs about 0.49 manat," he added.

The Baku metro has been functioning since 1967. It has 21 metro stations. The 22-nd station Azadliq Prospect is planned to be put into operation by late 2009.
