Azerbaijani government intends to reduce poverty to zero: minister
Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec.10 / Trend , U.Ismayilova /
Roughly 13 percent of the population lives in poverty in Azerbaijan, Labor and Social Protection Ministry Poverty and Social Aid Department Chief Adviser Musa Agamaliyev said yesterday.
"The figure was 49.2 percent in 2003 and 15.8 percent in 2008," Agamaliyev said.
He added that the results were obtained from realizing several state programs and projects, as well as a strategy of prolonged development and maximum poverty reduction.
The government successfully realize these programs and focuses on regional economic and social development, the ministry said. Recent programs have resulted in the employment of 600,000 individuals.
"There is no country without poor people in the world, but Azerbaijan's goal is to reduce the poverty level to zero," Agamaliyev said.
