Azerbaijan and Russia's Astrakhan region plan to resume ferry communication between the Baku and Olya ports within two months, Astrakhan Vice Governor Konstantin Markelov said today.
"We have agreed with the Azerbaijani side to resume ferry communication soon. Some logistical schemes both in Astrakhan and Azerbaijan need to be created. We know who will deal with this. We met with business organization representatives who are holding negotiations," Markelov said.
He added that the corresponding agreements have been signed. The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry confirmed at a meeting yesterday that ferry communications will start again soon.
"We intend to resume ferry communication between the ports of Olya and Baku," Markelov said. "Ferry communication worked before. But it was not very developed and we failed to fill loads. We discussed these problems yesterday with the ministry and Caspian Shipping Company. We outlined future plans."
He said Astrakhan and Azerbaijan agreed that a protocol will be signed between the ministry and Astrakhan to realize the project next spring.
"Working groups will be established to develop all issues hampering the project," Markelov said.
