The EU Twinning Programme between the State Statistical Committee of the Republic Azerbaijan and the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, in cooperation with the National Bulgarian Statistical Institute, will support the upgrading of statistics in Azerbaijan by introducing a set of new statistical methods closely aligned with EU standards, Coordinating Bureau of the EU project in Azerbaijan reported.

The EU funded Twinning Project "Support to the State Statistical Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SSC) to reach European Standards in National Accounts, on observed economy, business statistics and producer price index" started this month in Baku. This important 24 month initiative of circa AZN 1 million from the European Commission is implemented within the frameworks of the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) and the Eastern Partnership.

Statistics is one of the priorities identified in the ENP Agenda as well as in the State Program for improvement of the official statistics of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2008-2012. Since the international standards in economic statistics have rapidly evolved in the last decade, the SSC is enhancing its capacity to meet the requirements of the "EU Acquis". The project objectives aim at upgrading the National Accounts to a higher level of comparability with the European System of National Accounts; at estimating with more accuracy the non-observed economy; at improving data coverage of business statistics by introducing the best practices of the EU Member States and at extending the Producer Price Index to gather data for the intermediate consumption in the different branches of the economy.
