Uzbekistan realizes large textile project over 2010-2012

Uzbekistan plans to implement a project to create a large textile complex worth $82 million in 2010 - 2012, the State Joint Stock Company Uzbekengilsanoat (Uzbeklegprom).

The complex with design production capacity of 10,000 tons of dyed yarn, 22.5 million square meters of cotton yarn and 9 million pieces of finished garments per year will be established on the basis of partially constructed buildings of Kokand textile plant (city of Kokand, Ferghana).

Spinning and dyeing production worth $48 million will be established in the first phase of construction until 2011. Weaving and clothing production worth $30 million and $4 million, respectively, will be set up in the second phase, in 2011 - 2012.

The project will be financed through loans, drawn by the Uzbek National Bank for Foreign Economic Activity, own funds of Uzbekengilsanoat and Kokand's management.

The project was included in the program for the development of the industrial potential of the city of Kokand, approved by the Uzbek government.

Uzbekyengilsanoat was transformed from the Light Industry Ministry by the presidential decree in 2002. It unites about 170 enterprises with total production capacity of 300,000 tons of cotton yarn, 111.7 million square meters of cotton fabrics, 59 tons of knitted fabric, 108.5 million pieces of knitted and 8 million pairs of hosiery.

It was reported that a program on modernization of textile industry worth $615 million for 2008-2012 was approved in Uzbekistan. During the implementation of 79 projects, it is planned to increase the processing of cotton fiber up to 510,000 tons, as well as to increase the production of cotton yarn to 407,000 tons, and cotton - up to 320 million square meters. Over 50 projects with foreign investments worth over $1 billion have been realized in the textile industry of the Uzbek Republic since 1991.

According to the official statistics, the textile plants in Uzbekistan reduced the production of cotton yarn by 10,5 percent last year compared with up to 136.104 tons, cotton fabrics at 28.7 percent - up to 91.087 million square meters in 2007.
