Uzbekistan and Iran likely to expand business cooperation

An Uzbek-Iranian bilateral agreements package aimed at strengthening business cooperation will be signed during the 10th meeting of the joint Uzbekistan-Iran economic commission, a source in the Uzbek government reported.

The 10th meeting of the joint Uzbekistan-Iran intergovernmental commission on trade-economic and scientific-technical cooperation was launched in Tehran Jan.17.

The Uzbek delegation was headed by Uzbek Vice Prime, Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade Minister Elyor Ganiyev.

The Uzbek-Iranian economic relations are based on principles of mutually beneficial cooperation. Dialogues and consultations on bilateral relations have become permanent. The sides have held three meetings at the highest level since 2000.

The interaction between the ministries and the departments of the two countries are also gradually developing. The ninth meeting of the Uzbek-Iranian intergovernmental commission on trade-economic and scientific-technical cooperation was held in Tashkent in July 2008.

About 117 joint ventures created with the participation of Iranian investors operate in Uzbekistan. About 29 Iranian companies opened their representative offices in Uzbekistan. The Uzbek-Iranian trade turnover for the nine months of 2009 amounted to $376.5 million.
