Population density soars

The Azerbaijani population is 8.997 million people in 2010, which is 1.1 percent, or 100.000 people, more compared to 2008.

The Nine-millionth Azerbaijani citizen was born in January 2010. At the moment, the density of Azerbaijan's population is 104 people per square kilometer, including the 54.2 percent who live in cities and the 45.8 percent living in villages.

As of Jan.1, 2010, 49 percent of the population is men and 51 percent women.

Some 23 percent of the Azerbaijani population is children under 14; 70 percent is people from 15 to 64 years and seven percent is 65 or older. About 31.2 percent is teenagers.

Projected life expectancy for a newborn is 72.7 years; 75.4 years for girls and 70 years for boys.

In 2009, 54.1 percent of the newborn were boys and 45.9 percent girls.

Calculations show that a woman is expected to have 2.3 children in her life.
