Sixty-nine people died in Azerbaijan during industrial activities in 2009

In 2009, the Azerbaijani Labor and Social Protection Ministry's Labor Inspectorate conducted a monitoring in 2,438 enterprises - 959 state and 1,479 private companies, inspection head Nabi Sukurlu said at a press conference. In 2008, the inspectorate conducted monitoring of 2,569 enterprises, including 1,119 state and 1,450 private enterprises.

"During the monitoring employees received payment in the amount of 681,177 manat, compensation for injures in the amount of 165,178 manat, as well as social payments in the amount of 199,209 manat," Shukurlu said.

He said that 55 people illegally dismissed were reinstated in their former jobs in 2009.

During 2009, employees of the Labor Inspectorate revealed 9,124 violations of the rights of workers, 22 percent of which were due to a lack of labor contracts, or violation of their articles, 13.3 percent - wage irregularities, 12.3 percent - technical security rules, 9.3 percent - safety protection rules, and six percent social benefit payment.

Most violations were recorded in the industry (2,038 cases), trade (1,942), construction (718), housing and communal services (918), health (814), sciences and education and culture (745).

"Most offenses - 58 percent or 5,263 incidents - were found in the private sector," Shukurlu said.

During the year, 162 officials who have violated the rights of their employees have been also fined in the amount of 553,870 manat, 27 percent or 149,350 manat of this amount fall to the sphere of trade, the sphere of transport and communications - 14 percent or 77,500 manat, industry - 13 percent or 72,400 manat, the construction sector - 12.7 percent or 70,600 manat.

"In 2009 employees were also provided with payment and other charges amounting to 1 million manats which were delayed. 65 percent or 681,176 - of this amount fall in wages, 19 percent or 199,209 - social benefits and compensations, and 15 percent or 164512 manats - compensation because of injures," Shukurlu said.

He also noted that during last year 250 accidents, including 65 cases occurred in the construction sector compared to 255 and 65 cases respectively in 2008. As a result of accidents 69 people died, including 32 persons - in the construction sector. 218 people injured with varying severity in production during this period, including 48 people in the construction sector.

Shukurlu saud that within announcing 2009 as the Child Year, the Inspectoriate conducted monitoring in connection with the facts of using of child labor, as a result of which 62 facts were revealed in enterprises where minors worked. Administrative sanctions have been applied towards the heads of these enterprises.

On Jan. 27, the official exchange rate is 0.8034 manat to $1.
