ADB sets up representation in Ashgabat

Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Feb. 19 / Trend H. Hasanov /

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) decided to open a permanent representative office in Ashgabat, a bank's press release reported citing ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda.

"We are confident that this action will allow the ADB to be closer to our clients in Turkmenistan and create favorable conditions for effective long-term partnership," Kuroda said.

The ADB has worked many years with Turkmenistan as a reliable partner.

Kuroda, who is in Ashgabat now, met with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov and held talks with the leadership of the Turkmen Central Bank.

Turkmenistan joined the ADB in 2000. The bank has recently been trying to attach importance to a Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project, which cannot begin due to tensions in Afghanistan.
