Japan is interested in expanding joint uranium mining projects in Kazakhstan, Kazatomprom reported. The company summed up the results of the official visit to Japan by OSCE Chairman and Secretary of State - Kazakh Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev and Kazatomprom Board Chairman Vladimir Shkolnik.

"During the visit, the officials held several meetings with leading Japanese companies, as well as academia. The meetings mainly discussed cooperation and joint projects in the fields of uranium and rare metals, as well as the development and deepening of scientific and technical interaction," the company reported.

During a meeting with Toshiba head Norio Sasaki March 23, the sides discussed joint actions and projects to develop uranium and rare metal mining.

"In addition, meetings with the managements of TEPCO and Marubeni highlighted issues of growing energy consumption in Japan and the country's interest in enhancing joint uranium mining projects in Kazakhstan," the source said.

The prompt ratification of an intergovernmental agreement on the peaceful use of atomic energy signed between Kazakhstan and Japan is a key issue in this regard.

Moreover, the sides discussed the Renard-U and Kizil Kum projects and their future development.
