Over 74 percent of direct foreign investments in Azerbaijan fall to oil and gas sector

The total amount of foreign capital drawn in the Azerbaijani economy in 2009 in the form of direct investments amounted to $2.899 billion, the Central Bank of Azerbaijan said with reference to the balance of payments. The weight of oil and gas sector in the structure of these investments was 74 percent.

These investments are used in connection with the construction work as part of major oil and gas projects undertaken by BP Exploration Ltd (a draft of condensate field Shah Deniz) and the Azerbaijan International Operating Consortium at Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli.

It is estimated that direct investments, drawn in the non-oil sector of the economy amounted to $752.8 million. Their weight in the total amount of foreign direct investments drawn to the country amounted to 26 percent.
