Uzbekistan increases production of steel by 1 percent in January-May

Uzbekistan in January-May 2010 increased steel production by 1.1 percent compared to the same period in 2009 - up to 322.400, the official statistics said.

Production of ferrous metals increased by 1,2 percent - up to 305.800 tons.

In 2009, Uzbekistan produced 716.400 tons of steel, which is 6,2 percent more than in 2008, and 687.100 tons of finished steel (up 6.9 percent).

The main steel producer in the country is the joint production association Uzbek Metallurgical Plant. "Uzmetcombinat" is the only enterprise in Central Asia working at the scrap metal. The company produced more than 95 percent of all steel and 100 percent of ferrous metals in Uzbekistan. Earlier plant processed scrap metal coming from the Central Asian republics. A part of imported scrap is processed at the tolling basis.
