Health Ministry: Population's health is one of priority issues for Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Health jointly with the Agency for International Development (USAID) held some events to raise awareness about healthy lifestyles through the joint project "Reproductive health and family planning for 2004-2010", head of the organization of medical services of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Health, Elmira Aliyeva said.

"Health of the population is one of their priority issues for each country in the world, including Azerbaijan", Aliyeva said.

She said that its members have undertaken activities to inform the public, health staff about the importance of reproductive health and family planning and contraceptive use to prevent an unwanted pregnancy which is a problem not only for women but also for other family members within a joint project, which was implemented over six years.

Aliyeva also said that as a part of the measures, the level of maternal mortality in 2009 dropped to 24.3 percent compared to 26.5 percent in 2008. Infant mortality in 2009 was 11,3 percent.

"These figures today are considered to be satisfactory, because it is impossible to achieve the desired results in the short term, but in the nearest future the Ministry of Health intends to achieve the lowest mortality rates for mothers and children", Aliyeva said.
