About 60,000 hectares of cultivated land were flooded due to a natural disaster, Azerbaijani Agriculture Minister Ismet Abbasov said today.

"Some 26,000 hectares of the land are used for grain, 22,800 hectares for perennial forage grass, potatoes, melons, sugar beets and other agricultural products," he said.

According to Abbasov, ministry officials are working with the Emergency Situations Ministry to calculate the compensation to be provided to local farmers and home owners.

"The amount of damage and compensation will soon be announced," he said. "Each and every citizen who suffered will receive compensation."

Since early May, floods occurred in 40 districts of Azerbaijan due to the rise of the Kur River and heavy rainfalls. About 20,000 houses were flooded, more than 300 destroyed, 2,000 became unsafe and 50,000 hectares of cultivated land were left under water.
