The Azerbaijani businessmen were presented the opportunities and prospects of the program of the European Union GSP + at a "How to export goods to EU?" seminar organized by the Economic Development Ministry and the European Union July 5.

"The ministry conducts a series of seminars with the presentation of rules for the use and benefits of the program GSP + to increase the awareness of entrepreneurs. These activities have a positive impact on the development of non-oil sector," Economic Development Ministry's Apparatus Head Samir Valiyev said.

Valiyev said the indicators of the country's external trade grow and qualitative characteristics of the trade balance change in a positive trend.

"Azerbaijan's trade turnover has made $10.6 billion for five months of 2010, of them $8.2 billion accounted for exports and $2.4 billion - imports. The surplus amounted to about $6 billion," Valiyev said.

He said the country's non-oil exports almost doubled during the report period.

"We expect that such events will have a positive impact on increasing non-oil exports in the future," Valiyev said.

The ministry has already held eight workshops with the aim of presenting features of the program GSP +.

The ministry launched similar workshops in Baku and the country's regions in 2009. Azerbaijan has access to the EU GSP + preferences system since January 2009. This will allow the country to export to the European market up to 7.200 items of goods on confessional terms, which will increase the export potential of the country and is of great importance for structural diversification.
