Date of opening regional office in Baku to strengthen WTO potential on Europe determined

The Azerbaijani State Customs Committee (SCC) and the United Nations Development Programme will discuss prospects for expanding future cooperation, the SCC said in the "Customs" newspaper.

A joint project of the Azerbaijani Government and the United Nations Development Programme to strengthen the SCC's potential and creation of network for data transmission have had a positive impact on the development of the customs services sphere, the State Customs Committee chairman Aydin Aliyev said at a meeting with Resident Coordinator of the United Nations and Resident Representative for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Fikret Akcura.  According to him, a draft of Customs Code, which has been submitted to the country's Government for consideration, has been already prepared within a joint project to improve customs services in Azerbaijan.

In addition, he said, a regional office to strengthen the potential of the World Customs Organisation on Europe will be opened in Baku already in November of 2010.

According to Aliyev, reconstruction works are underway in all checkpoints, after which all the goods and vehicles will undergo customs control in a simplified mode. It will play an important role in facilitating trade and enhancing security.

Akcura said cooperation between the SCC and the UN Development Programme will further expand.
