Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug.3 / Trend /

At present, Iran is working on a project connecting the country's railways through Iraq and Syria to the Lebanon's railway, the Iranian iribnews television's official website quotes the Iranian Transport Minister Hamid Behbahani.

According Behbahani, the project will be discussed today at a meeting of working groups of Iran and Syria's transport ministries in Damascus.

Iran, Syria and Lebanon have already expressed their willingness to implement it, he added.

"Iraq will begin construction works on the railway from the border town Hanigin to Baghdad in order to implement the project," Behbahani said.

He said the project will reduce transport costs for freight transportation, increase the amount of trade turnover between the region's countries and facilitate the conditions for passengers making the pilgrimage from Iran to Iraq and Syria.
