Azerbaijani livestock production on rises by 3 percent

Total crop production in Azerbaijan fell by 18.5 percent, while livestock production rose by 2.8 percent in January-July of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009. Agricultural production declined by 10 percent in January-July, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee reported.

Sowing was performed on 1,583,100 hectares as of Aug.1, which is 7.2 percent less than in 2009. The sown area expanded mainly due to cotton and perennial grass crop growth.

This year, cotton seeds were sown on 30,000 hectares (42.9 percent more than last year), sunflower seeds were sown on 9,000 hectares (9.8 percent), sugar beets were sown on 8,500 hectares (10.4 percent), tobacco was sown on 1,400 hectares (16.7 percent) , perennial herbs were sown on 81,400 hectares (13.7 percent) and melons were sown on 31,700 hectares (1.9 percent).

Torrential rains in recent months had negatively impacted agricultural production, the committee reported. As a result, 1,836,900 tons of grain (19.9 tons per hectare) was harvested as of July 5. The figure is 959,600 tons of grain less than the same period of 2009.

In addition to grain, 471,600 tons of potatoes were also harvested from sown area (with a decline of 14.4 percent), 653,500 tons of vegetables (with a decline of 1 percent), 245,000 tons of melons for food products and others (with a decline of 5.6 percent).

During the reporting period, 361,200 tons of green tea leaves were also harvested from tea plantations, which is 25.3 percent more than in the first half of 2009.

The country produced only 174,700 tons of livestock and poultry meat, 868,500 tons of milk and 709.5 million chicken eggs and 13,600 tons of wool in January-July 2010. Meat production increased by 3,100 tons, or 1.8 percent, milk increased by 40,800 tons, or 4.9 percent, and wool increased by 400 tons, or 3.5 percent, while egg production decreased by 12.1 million units, or 1.7 percent compared to first half of 2009.

The total value of agricultural production based on actual cost amounted to 1.943 billion manat, which is 7.74 percent less than during the same period of 2009. Price of forestry products based on actual cost amounted to 790,000 manat compared to 784,000 in the same period of 2009, the fishery - 59,600 manat compared to 87,400 manat in 2009.
