Turkmenistan is likely to nominate its candidature to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the local media quoted Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov as saying.

"One of the priorities of our cooperation is Turkmenistan's activization in the UN structures dealing with economic and social problems," he said.

Nominating its candidacy in this body for 2013-2015, Turkmenistan will be able to provide maximum assistance to the UN in promoting international cooperation, as well as close integration of the various states and regions of the planet in the process of sustainable development and ensuring welfare of the people.

"We also regard the country's membership in the ECOSOC from the standpoint of efficient use of Turkmenistan's infrastructure of opportunities by the international community to enhance the activities of various UN agencies directly in the regions of Central Asia and Caspian Basin," Berdimuhammedov said.

The Turkmen leader instructed the country's relevant authorities, before the election period, to work with specialized UN agencies - the Economic and Social Affairs Department, UN Economic Commission for Europe and UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific - on joint projects, the results of which could be used later by the Turkmen delegation to the ECOSOC to promote large-scale social and economic programs at the global and regional levels.
