Georgia starts distribution of American wheat seeds to farmers

Georgia has begun distributing wheat seed imported from the U.S., the Georgian Agriculture Minister Bakur Kvezereli said today as he observed the distribution process in Gachiani.

He said the distribution of seeds is being carried out as part of an Agriculture Ministry target program. Farmers and peasants are able to obtain seeds from warehouses in Gachiani and Gori, with one kilogram of seed costing one dollar ($ 1 = 1.8060 lari).

Under the terms of the program, payment for the seed can be made after the harvest and sales of the crop.

According to the minister, the seed is highly productive wheat seed and the use of the seed fund will be possible another four years.

Some 2,000 tons of seed have been supplied from the U.S. to Georgia.
