Deputy transport minister: Construction of new port in Azerbaijan to begin this year

Azerbaijani Transport Ministry plans to begin the construction of a new international trade seaport in Alat settlement (near Baku) this year, Azerbaijani Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panahov said Tuesday.
According to him, all the preparatory work has been completed and the port area is ready to begin construction. Work will be accelerated.
The port also contains logistics center, which enables to store, send or forward a variety of goods. This will be the biggest logistics center in the region, Panahov said.
Panahov said today in Brussels at an investment conference, was conducted a presentation of the Azerbaijani project, which was welcomed by the EU and investors.

Port construction will be carried out in three phases, said the official. In the first stage, an infrastructure for transshipment of 10 million tons of cargo and 40,000 large containers will be created in the port. The capacity of port is projected to be reached up to 20 million tons and one million containers.

To ensure traffic it is planned to involve countries in the region, as well as China.

In particular, the first phase of the project involves construction of two ferries, three cargo berths for receiving container ship 'ro-ro' and usual (universal) bulk carriers, the second phase - construction of three more cargo berths, the third - another two cargo berths. The project is estimated at more than $ 400 million.

Currently there are a total of six international trade ports in the Caspian Sea - Baku (Azerbaijan) and Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan), Aktau (Kazakhstan), Astrakhan (Russia), Enzeli and Neka (Iran).
