One of the most important superiority of the western branch of (Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran) of the North-South transport corridor is its smallest length compared with other two routes, the director of the Russian Giprotranstei JSC Fyodor Pekhterev said Tuesday in Baku.

According to him, the longest length variant of the project is the route that passes through Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, which in turn leads to an increase in terms of transportation and additional costs. Also, this option is complicated by the large number of transit countries through which the railway route will pass.

Despite that another route Uzen-Berikend-Gorgan has less length, it is still a thousand kilometers long route that would connect transport systems of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran. In this case, the only missing link is the lack of stretch of over 350 kilometers on the Iranian territory.

Pekhterev also noted the importance of the TRACECA transport corridor, which provides transportation of cargo to the Europe-Caucasus-Asia. However, one of the major challenges of this corridor is the presence of two transitions in both the Caspian and the Black seas, which also affects the period of cargo transportation.
