Azerbaijan’s transport sector increases cargo transportation

According to State Statistics Committee in January-September 2010, the cargo transportation by all transport means made up 145.8 million tons of cargo or 2.8 percent more than 2009.

The private sector share in cargo transportation was 71.6 percent. In January-September, of the total cargo volume transported, 51.1 percent accounted for road transport, 32.1 percent - pipelines, 11.1 percent - rail and 5.7 percent - by sea.

The passenger transportation during the reported period totaled 1 billion people, which is 3.7 percent more than January-April 2010. Passenger transportation by automobile was 86.5 percent, metro - 13 percent.

About 16.3 million tons of cargo was transported by rail, which is 6 percent more than similar figure in January-September 2009.

The cargo shipping via sea rose by 8.3 percent, which is 15.1 percent less compared to 2009. All amount of cargo shipping fell on international operations. The volume of cargo processed in Azerbaijani ports was 7.5 million tons in January-September 2010, which is 24.5 times more compared to last year.

The cargo transportation by vehicles in January-September 2010 made up 74.5 mln tons of cargo, or 6.2 percent more than the same period of 2009. Passenger transportation comprised 875,3 mln people with 96.5 percent people using buses and 3.5 percent people - vehicles.

In January-September 2010, 132 mln passengers used metro.

In January-September 2010, the passenger transportation via airways totaled 767,600 people compared to 22.1 percent in the same period of the last year.
