Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov named as "urgent" the task of strengthening the capacity of the national tanker fleet "through acquisition of new modern vessels capable of transporting liquid hydrocarbons not only within country, but also to external markets," an official Turkmen source reported.

It is dictated by the "rising volumes of oil production in Turkmenistan, which, in turn, requires the provision of adequate transport facilities in this area", Berdimuhammedov said at the last governmental meeting.

The Turkmen State Sea and River Transport Service will soon receive the next ultra-modern oil tanker "river-sea", which was built in the Russian Krasnoe Sormovo factory in Nizhny Novgorod on the government order. The exploitation of the new ultra-modern tankers should further strengthen international cooperation in the transport sector and increase the intensity of the cargo traffic running through the territory of Turkmenistan.

"We must use maximum the advantageous geographical position of Turkmenistan, using all available opportunities of the Turkmenbashi international sea port, which today is a major transit hub of the international transport corridor Europe-Caucasus-Central Asia," Berdimuhammedov said.

Turkmenistan annually produces about ten million tons of oil. The country also transports raw materials through Azerbaijan.
