Construction of a railway from Hairatan border city to Mazar-e-Sharif, the second largest city in Afghanistan is scheduled for November, a press release of the Asian Development Bank's representation in Uzbekistan says.

Uzbekistan's Temir Yollari (Uzbekistan's Railways) state joint stock railway company, the contractor of construction of railway Hairatan-Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan worth $129 million, started construction in late January of 2010.

Uzbekistan Temir Yollari won a tender on construction of railway Hairatan-Mazar-e-Sharif with the extension of 75 km. Uzbekistan's Railways and Afghanistan's Public Affairs Ministry signed a relevant contract in November 2009

The project is financed due to grant of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for $165 million and own resources of Afghanistan Government for $5 million.

Almost a half of Afghan import, as well as a major part of humanitarian cargo pass through Hairatan port. Commissioning a new railway will significantly increase cargo transportation.

According to the Uzbek side's estimates, commissioning railway transport between Hairatan and Mazar-e-Sharif will contribute to the development of Transafghan corridor, which will increase the transit trough new railway route Tashguzar-Baysun-Kumkurgan, which is directly connected Uzbekistan with the southern regions of the country - Kashkadarya and Surkhandarya.

ADB's press release notes that Uzbekistan's strict commitment to promoting regional economic cooperation through the connection of railway communications with Afghanistan and export of excess electricity to Kabul.

Uzbekistan in 2009 completed the construction of transmission lines "PTL-220kV Uzbekistan-Kabul with length 442 km, through which uninterrupted electricity supply to the capital of Afghanistan is realized.
