Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev took part in the foundation laying ceremony of the new Baku International Sea Trade Port Complex in the Alat settlement, the AzerTaj state news agency reported.
Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov said the port complex project was prepared by the Dutch Royal Haskoning. The company won an international tender. The dredging operations in the entrance channel, the shunting of the port's marine section and the design of coastal infrastructure have already been completed.
The port is choosing the modern cranes, machines and mechanisms that will be used and is also to designing the port's modern navigation and communications systems. An area of 400 hectares was allocated for the port's construction.
Construction will be carried out in three stages:
- During the first stage, the port complex's transshipment will amount to 10 million tons of cargo and containers - 40,000 TEU;
- During the second stage, transshipments will hit 17 million tons of cargo and containers - 150,000 TEU;
- During the third stage, transshipments will hit to 25 million tons of cargo and containers - 1 million TEU.
The first stage will be completed within 3.5 years. An international transport and logistics center is also planned to built at the port complex.
