Minister: About 20 new travel companies created in Azerbaijan in 2010
Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 5 / Trend A.Akhundov /
Roughly 20 new travel companies have been established in Azerbaijan this year, Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfaz Garayev said.
According to teh official, the ministry also closed four tour companies due to violations.
"There are also companies whose licenses expired and they did not seek renewal, which means that they have withdrawn from the market," he said. "At present, about 230 companies have been licensed to work in tourism."
He stressed that two vocational schools offering tourism training will open later this year.
"We should not expect service quality to dramatically change in the next 2-3 years, as this is a gradual process," the minister said. "We have the Tourism Institute and we plan to open two vocational schools this year. We hope to increase the service quality level in this sector over the next 3-5 years through the development of tourism education."
About 400 hotels also operate in the country, Garayev added.
"Of them, only 70 were qualified, that is, received stars," he said. "If a hotel is given a star, it means that we monitor its service quality. Every year, we are tightening the licensing terms for the sake of providing more professional services on the market."
